A New Throwback to Add to the Collection.

As if I didn't have enough throwback jerseys, fitteds, and kicks. Time to make some space and welcome these badboys into the crib. Need to clean that fridge and empty the cupboards. I am definitely going in. I should mention that Mountain Dew might be one of the greatest liquids on the planet. Diabetes sweet neon green soda can't be topped. Miss those days of unlimited pop at Taco Bell. TB, you might see me again.

Throwback Pepsi and Mountain Dew are set to drop on or about April 20th and should be on shelves for approximately 8 weeks. Aside from the retro logo, Pepsi is also going way back in terms of ingredients. That means REAL SUGAR. None of that diabolic High Fructose Corn Syrup. (One would think with my love for all things H, I'd mess with the HFCG. But even Howfresh has his limits.) I can finally drink soda again. My self-mandated HFCS soda boycott will be temporarily lifted as long as these are available. Unbeknownst to me, Mexican sodas contain real sugar. Time to hit some Mexican markets.

Unfortunately the logos seen at the top will not be used, rather using other "retro"-esque logos. Certain soda enthusiasts/purists might be appalled by this but it's cool with me. I just care about sugar in my drank. I know you're wondering what kind of sugar will be used. Per an article I read (link at bottom of page) there will be a mix of cane sugar and beet sugar. Ideally we would have organic cane sugar from co-op farmers in the hills of DR, but beggars can't be choosers.

If they really wanted the retro feel these would be available in glass, but it appears only 20 oz. plastic bottles and 12 oz. cans will house this wonderful beverage. As of now this seems like an 8 week stint, but if sales and interest are through the roof, this campaign might be extended. It's time we take a stand and demand C12H22O11 back in our lives.

Obama in the office, A-Rod is hurt, and sugar is back in our sodas. What a fucking country!!!!!

If I Said it I Meant It, Bite My Tongue for No One, Call Me Evil, or UNBELIEVABLE.

It doesn't feel like 12 years passed since Big was gunned down in Cali. His music flourishes, and personally, gets better with each listen. I was in Hunter College when news came out that he got shot. I was talking to some chick that was mad open off it, but I didn't feel that way. I fucked with his music and Ready to Die was and still is my shit, but I wasn't invested. Big L's death affected me on a much deeper level- I missed out on a post for that one. I'll make up for it next year. Back then I was on my KCR/Fat Beats/Foot Works shit. On that Fuck Hot 97 vibe- Checking shows at Nuyorican and really being part of the underground circuit. Company Flow, Natural Elements and so on. And Biggie was no longer that grimey dude, but on that flossing Rolies in the sky steez. And us "backpackers" were against that shit. Sell out or whatever you want to call it. Puff was the enemy. Though "Mo' Money" was that shit. Webster Hall what up.

As years passed it dawned on me how talented the dude was. I don't know of any other artist that told stories as clearly and visually as Big. He's just easy to listen to. And while that might sound like no big deal, that shit is HUGE. A major compliment in my opinion. He didn't use big words or elaborate word play, he just had great flow, cadence, presence, and mad character- that would probably be called swagger in the '09. I'm not one to do a top 5 or 10 MC list, but today Big would definitely be in there, while years ago I doubt he'd place. My ear wasn't mature yet.

I never saw him live. Had tickets to a show he was supposed to headline at SUNY Albany back in '94 but he got arrested for beating up some dude with a bat outside Nell's. Even if his fat ass was immobile and gasping for breath I still wish I could have witnessed it.

And we got some shit to celebrate his legacy. I was super psyched when I got my hands on it, and if you haven't peeped it yet, you should too. The Ready To Die O.G. Edition, featuring unreleased tracks, original recordings and demos. Some shit is the same but there are some real treats. The original "One More Chance" that was on the Clue tape back then- with the Debarge "All This Love" sample. That shit kills the album version. The original "Juicy" which Pete Rock produced. And one of the hardest joints ever, "Come On" featuring Sadat X. Which as we know was too hard to put on Ready to Die.

I Got 7 Mack-11s, about 8 38s, 9 Nines, 10 Mack-10s, the shits never end, you can't touch my riches, even if you had MC Hammer and the 357 bitches...

HOLY FUCKING SPICE!!!- Rhong Tiam in the West Village

I thought I could fuck with spicy food. Maybe I misunderstood hot for spice. I mess with Frank's, Texas Pete, Tabasco, Louisiana and so on. Ain't nothing. A little zing and then the calm. But spice. Spice doesn't let up. That shit puts your tongue in a full nelson and refuses to let go. Even when you're throwing your hand in the air or hitting the mat to surrender. Remission doesn't exist here. And then the hiccups start. The fucking hiccups. The terrible kind. The workers must have been on some "sirry rittle white boys thought they were brave." (No insult intended) I will never walk with my chest out in a southeast Asian spot again. I hold thee in reverence. Surprisingly the burn was minimal the next day. I was expecting way worse.

Rhong-Tiam is on La Guardia Place between West 3rd and Bleeker St. Formerly the Malaysian restaurant Penang, it might be located in the only "strip mall" on the island of Manhattan. Like a structure you'd see on Rt. 4 in NJ or Co-Op City, but even smaller. It's just weird. It's in the middle of NYU personnel housing so I understand the purpose of the strip when it was built. Today a liquor store, 3 restaurants and possibly one other business inhabit it. Rhong-Tiam is sandwiched between a Mexican and Italian restaurant. Once you get past the topical oddness you enter a warm, clean, mostly white space. It's pretty romantic in fact. I was with my brother so it didn't help me out at the end of the night, but it's a place to keep in mind, especially if you want Thai, when most Thai spots don't get it sexy. And it's fairly large, seating close to 80-90 heads at a time. By the time we left every table was filled. I can dig it.

I was in the mood for ramen type soup and luckily RT had several noodle soups. Rather then get a smaller soup and appetizer we sparked one large soup as the starter. And the torture began. I believe we ordered the Seafood Tom Yum Soup ($12). Wide rice noodles (chow fun type noodle), calamari rings, shrimp, sliced scallop, and shumai-type dumplings swimming in the devil's liquid, a red (blood) broth. Sliced pieces of a green vegetable floated on the surface- similar to green beans with crunch. I was too busy wiping the tears from my eyes and the shit from my nose to really know what was going on. One spoonful of the broth was all it took. We're talking M.O.P. "4 Alarm Blaze" status. There was nothing enjoyable about the dish- at the time. I get a kick out of the experience now, but ain't no smiling on Rhong Tiam Island. There wasn't much seafood in the soup- maybe 2 shrimp, 2 dumpling, one or 2 pieces of scallop and a little more calamari. Mind you, our waiter didn't mention anything about the heat factor on this dish. Not that it would have deterred us, but at least let me know I'm about to walk into a bad area. I would at least get my ditty bop bopping. So let me tell you, THIS IS FUCKING SPICY.

Following the soup I wasn't sure if I could go on. My throat felt like it was getting swollen and with my array of food allergies I wouldn't have been surprised if the soup had something that caused a reaction. Several swigs of Singha (the only beer they had that night) and some water I was good to go. Problem was one of the dishes we ordered was "Pork on Fire" ($13). They make it pretty clear that you're about to walk over flaming embers. Our waiter was pretty explicit about the terrordome we were about to enter. And based on the reticence earlier regarding the soup, I was pretty shook. The NY Times reviewed the spot back in June, you can see it HERE, and paid very special attention to this dish. Julia Moskin explained it this way, "It’s not so much a dish as a session: an hour spent suspended exquisitely between pleasure and pain, craving and fear." All I kept thinking was "fuck me". But check this out. The heat was minimal. Dead ass. Maybe it's like before you pierce something you get mad nervous thinking of the needle puncturing flesh, but once it happens- not even a flinch. Or maybe my tongue's capabilities were put into paralysis and I just couldn't register the heat. Now when I go to try it the second time I'll be bold and wind up crying like a little girl. Like when I got my nose pierced the 2nd time- that shit HURT.

I enjoyed the dish tremendously. Small tender chunks of pork sauteed with lemongrass, garlic, birds eye chili, kaffir lime leaves and basil. Between the sweetness of the basil, bite from the chili, citrusy-ness (?) of the lemongrass and robustness of the garlic, the dish displayed the complex blend of flavors that I expect from Thai and other southeastern Asian cuisines. Executed perfectly. The swine was moist - only wish there was more.

To keep it healthy we ordered the Three Season Tamarind Red Snapper ($22). A whole deep fried snapper served in a sweet and spicy tamarind sauce with red pepper, garlic, and pineapple. Another victory. The filets were sliced on each side of the fish so the eater doesn't have to cut any of the meat from the bone unless you want to get into the head and get some jowel, cheek and so on. It would be a shame to let it go to waste. The image above shows the head (see the teeth) and the rest of the fish curves around the plate. I even tried to eat the eye ball, but it was way too hard- reminded me of a juniper berry. I was on my Tony Bourdain for a minute. The fish was flaky, moist and flavorful. The batter was light and sopped up the tamarind like a squeegee. A definite recommendation.

Unfortunately I was only able to sample 3 dishes. But I'll be back. Get a typical noodle dish next time and I really want to try the Rhong Tiam chorizo appetizer. You can see the menu HERE. The menu was updated this past week so certain dishes are missing. Come nicer weather there is outdoor seating on a small porch to ogle at all the NYUers. The portions aren't that large and the prices are reasonable. I used to mess with Pam Real when I wanted Thai in the city, but after a couple more visits I can see Rhong Tiam taking the title.

H is for Hallelujah.

Yes. Say it loud. There are 2 things to be thankful for today. So let's raise our glasses and make a toast. First- my tape deck on my pc has been out of commission for a while- possibly since I moved to the new crib. Recently a hardware connect error message kept popping up. I had no clue what was going on. When computers work well, they're your best friend and life is good, but when the slightest problem occurs all hell breaks loose and things get fucked the fuck up. My dependency issues really have to get sorted out because I can't deal anymore. Anyway- a cord was missing that was needed. Found it, attached it, and everything's cooked in curry. On top of that I found a milk crate in my closet with tons of old tapes- Stretch and Bob's, Martin Moore's, mixtapes, and various other shit. Treats will be shared in the near future.

#2. Let's turn our attention to the lovely camo H fitted above. A seminal piece for any collector of H headwear. Several benedictions were bestowed upon me here. First, $25 for the fitted is good money, literally and figuratively. However, the cap is a 7 1/2, but I wear a 7 5/8. So why did I cop? Because the hat stretching machine at the New Era store on 4th Street between Broadway and Lafayette is one of the modern era's greatest inventions. The 7 1/2 turned to a 7 5/8 without a hitch for a mere $5. Think of all the fitteds you have that no longer fit due to a little sweat or lack of wear. This shit is a fountain of youth. The machine can safely increase a hat by 2 sizes. This really is some great news. No bullshit. I used it before for a hat purchases in-house, but forgot about its mystical powers until this past weekend. At this time I'd like to give a big shout to Nai and Strictly Fitteds for 2 years of killing it in the game. Nobody else hits you with relevant news like they do. Keep that shit up.

Added this one to the h-eap too. Not feeling it at all. Navy on black is too dark and the logo is wack. Fuck it, it'll be my Tuesday night laundry joint. The $25 price tag blinded me. These caps are usually $50 so I got over-gitty.

As mentioned, my tape deck is up and running and I had the bug last night. Converted mad shit. Also found a tape that I've been looking for for years. DJ K-Black from the Bronx back in 1994. My man Berto hit me with it and the shit left an indelible mark. All the treats from that year(Wu, Jeru, King Just, Crooklyn Dodgers, Lords of the Underground, Smif N Wessun, Snoop, and Memory Lane is on this shit) with some buttah blends on the beginning of side B. The dope shit- when DJs really worked to put out a tape. That Sweet Sable over NY State of Mind is bananas, even if for only 15 seconds. Scratches, blends, beat matching, just being creative. Enjoy.

Cam, A Couple of Things Changed While You Were Gone.

Letters To Cam from jeff on Vimeo.

Damn Killa- things have changed while you've been hibernating. Uptown might as well be called the valley. Or Dix Hills. "What up Cam Cam??" HYSTERICAL. "Hey Toyota Camron." Even more HYSTERICAL. While I don't dig every It's The Real video, this is pretty fucking hilarious. The new CNN joint is funny too. Need to dead that Boston hat though.

Some of you might have seen this already, or heard the tracks, but to be clear I don't break news, or music for that matter- I methodically cull what is out there, analyze, and then offer it after extensive research and thought. Pain staking thought. Props to Nahright, 2dopeboyz, Onsmash, and various other sites for the goods we have here.

This hiatus has definitely served Cam well. Dude's buzz is nonstop. And whoever sided with 50 now seems to have jumped on the Spacely Sprocket Rocket Ship (pause?). Watch other cats take this page from his playbook. I could do without certain artists for several years so I welcome it. His midwest pandering is a straight victory. He has his support in NYC, and he won't lose anybody by expressing some middle America love. He even shouts my favorite state. You already know. Shit- those Shady Ltd., G-Unit and Mecca wearing dudes will start wearing the Dipset bird as if it was the cross. All those little kiosks in malls will make cake off the brrrr brrrrr (bird sound). What are the chances Cam was enrolled in marketing classes with the University of Phoenix? He gets computers putin' in order to get his buzzin' buzzin'!!!

Photobucket

Unfortunately blogger can't support GIF images. Achaaaaaa- love learning. By using an image hosting service animated gifs can appear. Blogger- step your gif came up. This shit is genius. Cam and Jesus Camp = amazing. If you're feeling blasphemous, clicking HERE might help reacquaint you with the man up top. Props to 2dopeboyz for the image.

Some new shit supposedly off Crime Pays tentatively set to drop on 5/5/09. Some treats- Hate My Job (like he ever worked), Cookin' Up, I Used to Get it in Ohio(shit grew on me like some No Limit joints in the late 90s), and some shit that had the potential to be a classic but failed- Cookies & Apple Juice. The title is amazing (there I go again with that word), not the kind of amazing that gets thrown around by this girl I know. I mean AMAZING. Unfortunately the beat was produced by Soulja Boy's younger cousin and falls very short. Maybe I'm being hypercritical. The thing is I love cookies and love apple juice even more. Red Cheek what up!!

In terms of all the videos he's been dropping, "These aren't really singles- really B-roll videos." I couldn't have said it any better.

I Used to Get in Ohio- back on his Mase with the shiny blue bubble. They say shit goes in cycles.

Colombians Be On Some Food Shit- That's Why Papi Got Big.

(I'd like to apologize in advance for the subpar photos. A picture's worth a thousand words but a word's worth...)

I'm new to the Colombian thing. But so far, so good. So very good. And before we get started, these people do not play when it comes to food. Based on what I've seen I don't understand how the entire population isn't on some Gordito shit.

Queens es el rey de la comida Colombiano. I rarely see the blue, red and yellow flag flapping in the Bronx and the same goes for the island of Manhattan. BK has more than the mentioned, though I don't think they have a large Colombian contingency. And Staten Island- who cares? For some 2007 demographics click HERE.

I'm kind of ashamed it took me this long to delve into this grub. You can say I was a shook ones, as I wanted to but was reluctant, having no direction and no clue what to order. On a Sneaker Fiends Unite tour with Internets Celebrity Dallas Penn I got a taste of what I was missing at Meson Colombiano in Jackson Heights. Any restaurant with a neon lobster is good in my book. DP, a man of vast knowledge, knew the special handshake at the door so we had no problems. The dude drinks pepsi with his cabernet, or vice versa. That is some purveyor of the good life shit- you get the picture. As I was told, and as I will tell the uninformed next man, order the bandeja typica (typical platter), or something similar to that- bandeja paisa, etc. Bandeja means tray or platter and the Colombians stack as much food as possible on the thing.

The top photo is what we're talking about. Rice, beans, grilled steak, fried egg, platano maduro (sweet plantain), chicharron (mix of fried pork skin, fat, and meat), arepa (corn cake), chorizo (sausage), and avocado. The minute I saw it I knew I'd be there for a considerable length of time. It takes me an hour just to eat one of these things. I was in no rush. Hours of sneaker scouring really build up the appetite.

Each item on the bandeja was prepared with care, nothing being an afterthought. The steak was very thin and seasoned well. The rice and beans acted as the bed that everything rested on. A little different than DR or PR rice and beans I was used to, but on point nonetheless. The chorizo was a bit spicy and added that necessary element of fire. The arepa was new to me as I'm used to arepas being more like a pastelito or empanada- a patty of sorts. This was more like a dense dumpling with no filling. If stomach space is limited, pass on this. The chicharron freaked me out a bit. Shit was fried pork fat with minimal meat. While I love the fat and gristle, this was a bit too much for me. Baby steps. The platano was one long piece, not the typical sliced greasy maduros I'm used to. This was more or less a mix of maduro and tostones- dry but sweet. And the egg just added some protein to an obviously protein deficient meal. The yolk made the arepa more enjoyable. Being allergic, I didn't go in on the avocado. DP said to order it anyway. Dude was really trying to see me in anaphylactic shock, and slowly take over the internets, one blogger at a time. DP- I see your strategy. Encyclopedia Black- you're next. The best part of the meal- the dish cost $12.50. The meal was washed down with a Colombiana Kola. I know I'm on my anti HFCS, but when in Rome...

The next stop on this Queens tour, we head southeast towards Jamaica landing at Punto Rojo on Hillside Ave. I've been spending a lot of time on Sutphin Blvd. and I wish I would have known about this place weeks earlier. I wasted a lot of lunches just filling myself up and not enjoying the food.

Punto Rojo, half bakery/half restaurant, is an oasis in a barren, shitty area. The food choices are terrible by the courthouses. Come on lawyers and judges, let's take advantage of your persuasive nature and bring some decent, edible spots to the area. But I digress. The only thing I ate their was soup. This isn't your typical soup- more like soup on winny or my favorite- Bole. The bowl is close to 8" in diameter and 4" tall. We're talking major spherical volume. And each order comes with a separate plate of salad, rice, platano and several chunks of meat- depending on the soup of the day (see photo above). All of this is yours for $8.50. I really don't understand how they can serve this much food for such a relatively inexpensive price. Same goes for the bandeja tipica.

Monday serves up Sancocho de cola, aka oxtail soup. Wednesday offers Sancoche de res, beef soup for the gringos. The soup is the same for both- the only difference with the meals is that oxtail is served on one plate while chunks of beef are provided on the other. Curiously, there is no beef in the soup. I assume it's a beef broth served with potatoes, yuca, and platanos. Rich and flavorful broth with a generous amount of cilantro. On brick days, this more than did the job.

Thursday is where it's at though. This is one of the best soups I've ever had- cuento verdad. It's called Ajiaco Santafereno and have absolutely no clue what it means. Delicious maybe. A chicken broth based soup with whole leaves of spinach, potato, chunks of chicken off the bone, and slices of corn on the cob. Thicker than typical chicken soup, the sweetness of the corn and cilantro balanced out the bitterness of the spinach and created some sort of soupal bliss. Whatever the fuck that means. Surprisingly the chicken was sin hueso (off the bone) which I prefer. Hate biting the bone. MEGA SUPER ULTRA PAUSE. The corn had to be eaten by hand, but who doesn't love using their hands to eat.

As mentioned, the soup comes with white rice, a small salad with lettuce, corn and pickled cabbage, platanos, and chicken. Forget the roughage and go in with the rice and chicken. Similar to a stewed chicken but in a lighter sauce. Very tender and very good.

I'm ready for more Colombian food. Based on the tiny sample I've tried, I'm sold and ready to get more. Problem is I doubt I'll be in Queens till the U.S. Open. Granted, make sure the restaurant looks up to snuff, but once that's settled, go in. And don't forget to ask for Ajiaco Santafereno. Adios familia.

The Cotto Fight Sucked and Some Fat Broad Knocked 2 Beers on My Kicks, But...

...I am hear to say that waterproof Air Force 1s really are waterproof. I am living testimony. Nike you can reach me at the email address in red to the right if you need me to do some speaking tours or dramatic reenactments of the events that occurred that night.

I had to sit through 2.5 wack fights and have some hippo donkey broad knock 2 of my drinks over (simultaneously), but the knowledge gained was worth the ordeal. The only thing that really bothered me, and still does, was the lack of an apology. I wouldn't expect her to replace my beers, but at least show some heartfelt remorse for your actions. Instead I got a "you shouldn't have kept them there." Ugh. At least I got to suffer through the fights next to her. And best believe the armrest was mine- ALL MINE. And in case she's reading this, your country man John Duddy sucks. It became very clear why he's undefeated, he fights bums. 26-0. Kuch, get your gloves on, hit the gym and put it on him. Hopefully you don't lose too many customers.

I'm somewhat to blame however. Not wanting to wait on any lines I copped some Smithwick's. Not such a fan- too dark for my liking. My boy didn't want it so I had 2 under my seat. That's how it went down. Plus it was hot as potatoes in there. I'm really disappointed with my first pro fight at the Garden. Think of all the history there, and I wound up at a Cotto throwaway and a Duddy bust. The best fight was a 4 rounder between some Russian dude named Korobov and Cory Jones from BK. Jones got knocked the fuck out with 10 seconds left in the fight. Face met the mat with the quickness. I need a rematch with the Garden. On a related note, I hear the Juan Manuel Marquez v. Juan Diaz fight last night for the lightweight title on HBO was the best of '09 so far.

I was amazed with how quick these shits dried up. When the beers spilled, I freaked out and felt my ankles. My jeans were soaked, but the forces acted as if nothing happened. Visually, these were one of the best kicks to drop in 2008. I never did a best of 2008 kicks post, but these would be in the top 2. Pony hair would be right up there. I'm a sucker for anything khaki, especially kicks. The white swoosh and heel tab are so crisp and the all gum sole lets you focus entirely on the uppers. Plus gum soles are always a win. I think I would have done without the brown "Air" and line around the sole. The canvas/cloth toebox and sidepanel are a great addition and add a ruggedness not so common in forces lately. Canvas also makes a lot of sense since the toeboxes on WP forces aren't perforated, and canvas forces are never perforated. It doesn't look off, while unperforated leather always looks odd. Good job Nike. The nubuck upper works perfectly and provides another rugged element. Picturing leather doesn't look right.

O.44 Sticky Rubber is branded on the ankle. All of Nike's waterproof kicks incorporate this now. Aside from looking cool (I always dig stitching and now branding by the heel) this material has a functional purpose. Per kicksonfire.com, "A unique feature is actually the new .44 Sticky Rubber which is seen on not just the outsole, but the entire midsole. This is a number assigned to the rubber compound used to create the sole, which is typically seen on ACG products. Basically, the number .44 was seen before on many Nike ACG products, but to the consumer, it was just a number. So actually .44 as a rubber compound isn’t some new technology, but referring to it as 0.44 Sticky Rubber is. It provides great traction, especially in wet weather."
This is some Reggie shit. Or even better, some Obama shit.

After seeing the abuse that these can take, I ODed. I think I wore them 4 days in a row or some crazy shit like that. I hope I didn't do permanent damage to my dogs. I have no problem wearing these out and not worrying about what happens. The shape is beginning to give and that's normal with wear, but the problem is that these are a 12 and a little roomy. I couldn't find an 11.5 and had to go in. I'm currently looking for an extra pair. Mind you, these retailed for $150, but were copped for $90- shout to my people at Vault. I've seen them for cheaper. These are so unbelievably dope that people don't know what to do when they see them. They get scared and run away.

I still have an unworn pair of waterproof Air Force 1 highs from late '06- early '07. I dig them but these don't even compare to the khakis. Plus metal eyelets on forces always pissed me off. I'll leave that for another post.
